Suburban Classic features Mac this Summer

The Suburban Classic magazine Summer 2008 cover shot is by Mac Hartshorn.

Photographed at Bay Head on the Jersey Shore this family shot is a studio favorite. We are thrilled the family have chosen to do another shoot with Mac this summer, once again at Bay Head and even more thrilled they are on the cover of Suburban Classic!

Brooke Perry writes a great article (see below) about Mac in the same publication, telling of his transformation from a Commodities broker in Miami to sought after children’s photographer in the Tri-State area.

Mac Hartshorn has come a long way from the days when he served as his school’s yearbook photographer because “no one else would do it.” These days, he is one of the tri-state area’s most sought-after portrait photographers – a gifted professional whose high-fashion background and intuitive editorial style create a “less is more” philosophy that resonates in every shot.A former commodities broker who happily gave up his Miami desk job to assist his photographer brother, Ted, on fashion shoots, Hartshorn never looked back. “I liken my career decisions to ‘floating on a breeze,’” he says. “I don’t agonize over decisions.”

“Compared to my brother, whose daily whirl consisted of fashion shoots, beautiful girls, travel and more beautiful girls, mine was a mighty mundane life. The stark truth is I wanted Ted’s life.”

Hartshorn quickly established himself in the world of high-fashion photography and was embraced by top designers, fashion magazines and catalogs. A photo shoot for Cosmopolitan magazine led him to Jennifer Goodin, a young photographer’s assistant from England who is now his wife. “She had just arrived in Miami from travels that had taken her half way around the world,” recalls Hartshorn. “She’d left the white cliffs of England to crew on a yacht through the Caribbean and South America, then finally after some wild adventures around the Panama Canal where she as held up by gun-toting bandits, she stepped off the boat in LA where she nannied for a wealthy business man and his wife and young son.”

Following two weddings – “a secret one 12 years ago and another two years later in a historic church in England, complete with top hats, tails and masses of wildflowers” – Jennifer and Mac settled in Hoboken. On “move day,” Jennifer discovered she was pregnant and, as she moved through the trimesters, Mac began to photograph her pregnancy. Later, friends who saw the shots asked him to photograph them, too. “This was just a few years after Demi Moore’s infamous nude pregnant cover shot for Vanity Fair by Annie Leibovitz,” said Hartshorn. “Pregnant bellies were a fashion statement.”

Once their baby girl was born, Mac took photographs of his daughter Madeline and soon all of their friends were clamoring for shots of their newborns, too. His desire to spend more time with his young family after the birth of their second daughter, Cameron, led him to establish a studio portrait business in Hoboken.

To his surprise, Hartshorn found that he really enjoyed this sort of photography. With the demand for his portrait work increasing, he backed off from his fashion work to concentrate fully on the airy sun-filled studio in the Monroe Arts Centre, where gleaming, golden hardwood floors, high ceilings and large industrial windows captured essence of his style.

“I put my own stamp on the genre by bringing the high-end style of fashion shoots to the intimate feel of family portraits,” he says. He attributes his success to a “fresh set of eyes not bogged down with knowledge of a traditional portrait studio. Making my own rules and breaking them constantly works for me and my clients.” He recounts with a grin, “I like to be spontaneous; each family or child is unique so each shoot is completely unique to them.” This allows me to “capture the family relationship in all its intimacy and honesty. I believe that really great shots are unexpected and undirected.”

“Kids force me to shoot more spontaneously, take more risks, camera angles from up high or floor level, knee level even to capture these little ballerinas and soccer stars as they dance and prance. It’s actually more wild and exciting taking pictures of kids than it ever was taking shots of models who just did whatever I asked,” he says.

Mac’s decision to photograph with natural light in the studio and his editorial style set him apart. Over the years, his client list has grown and spread throughout New Jersey and New York, with clients returning year after year for magical holiday shoots or to record important family milestones. Over the years, cherished friendships have blossomed as these clients return year after year.

Summer finds the Hartshorn family weekending at the Jersey Shore, with Jennifer and the girls based in Bay Head while Mac shoots clients at sunrise and sunset. Possibly Mac’s favorite location, “these beach images transcend as the moods of sky and ocean provide an ever-changing backdrop filled with liquid golden light or wreathed in soft dreamy mists.”

He feels the work he does now evokes an important emotional response from his clients that will last forever and may be treasured by generations to come. “When mom and dad break down in tears I know I’ve hit it.”

Tips for Looking Your Best for Your Photo Shoot!

Want the whole family to look their best and have fun at your Photo shoot.

We’d like to share a few helpful hints some parents have found worked well for them.

Looking great:

Schedule family Hair Cuts two weeks or more before shoot.

Mom’s and teenage daughters, we do have a make-up artist if you feel you want a little pre-shoot pampering. (Book when scheduling session) Very simple natural makeup is all that’s needed for these naturally lit shots. Apply no heavier than your normal day makeup. We want you to look like you at your very best. Hair should be styled the way you feel most comfortable.

Head bands and clips are often removed for shoot.

Costume jewelry is also generally removed.

feet1.gif

Mom and Dad’s hands and feet often star in sessions with babies and children so be prepared to take that hand or foot close up. Pedicures for the Moms and moisturized feet and hands for all the family.

Wear comfy clothing that is familiar.

Keeping it simple works best.

Bring a couple of changes for all so you have variation in looks for your shoot. Choose colors that suit your child and tone with Parents clothing.

Girls and Mom’s in pretty summer dresses, boys in clam diggers or shorts with soft tones polos or tees are great at the beach and studio. Denim works too. Dad’s can wear button down’s, polo shirts, jeans, khaki’s, shorts, your choice, we just want you to feel relaxed. By wearing a mix of neutrals and a couple of soft colors that tone together, your family shoot will be about your child’s face and eyes, not about his or her couture.

We suggest not to match everyone up ie: all white pants and navy tops for the family make images very formal, with the clothing dominating the finished photograph. Dark colors, black, very bright primary colors, bold patterns or stripes dominate the final look of your images too. Unless this is your dream look we prefer you leave these colors at home. Mac’s style captures the essence of a family bond or child’s expression, these dominating tones tend to overpower the emotion of his shots.

Moms show some skin please. Bare shoulders, arms, throats and legs are very flattering in photos. Bring a tank top or similar along to change into for those lovely Mom and child shots. Try not use glimmer powder on shoulders and throat. Well moisturized skin is best.

Dad’s play a big part in all our photo shoots. Check out our website gallery Parent & Child and you’ll see why we want you there too!

What to do once you are in the studio:

Once you are at the studio Mac and his camera need to fascinate your child and hold his focus. Please refrain from directing from the sidelines…it’s a toughee but Mac needs your co-operation on this one for a successful shoot!!!

We need your child’s focus to be on Mac not a loved teddy or doll so please don’t bring favorite toys to your shoot.

Running, dancing, jumping, laughing and even sometimes crying are all encouraged in our studio. Be prepared to swing and lift and even roll on the floor with your kids!

A small snack can be eaten during a break. We prefer that children are not encouraged to eat or drink during the photo shoot.

Mac will take time out to allow for feeding baby, diaper changes and even baby’s snooze!

Extended Meet us at the Beach Dates

_dsc9731.gif

Announcing our Extended Dates for Meet us at the Beach 2008.

Mac and Jennifer will be based at Bay Head for the month of August, Mac will shoot weekdays and weekends throughout August.
We had such a great response to our Beach shoots last summer, with really wonderful artwork being created with these images and 2008 bookings already very heavy, that we decided to move down to the Shore for the month. Gather your friends and family and book a Meet us at the Beach session.

Our favorite images come from these beach scenes shot early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Shooting in the softer light makes the shoot more comfortable for all ages and well worth getting the family up early or keeping them up a little later. With just two shoots a day, Mac can really concentrate on giving you his creative best.

Last year we saw really big canvas’s created for the beach house from Meet us at the Beach. Some were framed in our distressed white washed timber frames that work so well with the colors of the shore shots. One very mod client framed her images in our state of the art steel and stud frames for her contemporary beach side home. Whatever your style or taste we have the frame to showcase your special photograph.

Create a fun memory album from your beach session and discover our new Magazine Style albums which feature a full spread image on a cover beautifully bound in leather. These new albums showcase up to 50 images from your beach shoot and make a great coffee table book to give away to grandparents for the holidays.

And don’t forget holiday cards which are a great way to share your memories of the summer with friends and family at the Holidays. 8.gif

Mac the Artist

April 2008 Monroe Center for Arts

Mac Hartshorn unveiled his Exhibition of large Giclee Canvas prints at the Monroe Centre for Arts recently. Titled ‘No Animals Were Harmed Here: The Trials and Tribulations of a Portrait Artist’ this was the first showing of some of Mac’s favorite works captured during the last four years.
Mac Hartshorn “No Animals were harmed here: The trials and tribulations of the Portrait Artist” exhibition April 2008
All the images show babies or young children crying! Tears, crocodile or real encapsulate the essence of that moment in the photo shoot (or life) when the emotions of the smallest person in the room overtake all others. Time stops while the baby cries and mother soothes. Mac responds to the humor and beauty of these moments.

May : Franklin Lakes,NJ

Mid May and Mac’s exhibition moved to Franklin Lakes and the home of one of his favorite clients who hosted a cocktail party and one night exhibition to introduce Mac and Jennifer to families in Franklin Lakes. crybyb3.gifThe client was one of the rare mothers who purchased a crying baby image of her youngest child, so it was fitting that this exhibition be privately shown in her home. She saw the poignancy of that brief moment we can all relate too but may rather forget.

A permanent installation of Mac’s work “The Glorious Ages of Woman” is hanging at the newly completed and beautifully designed Women’s Health Centre run by Dr Joshua Weidman on Franklin Avenue, Franklin Lakes.

April 2008 Summit, NJ

Mac’s artwork adorned the gracious walls of another favorite client, whose home was included in a Summit House Tour recently. These framed works were the client’s own artworks Mac created from a Studio Session with the family earlier this year.

Square Foot Show at Art Gotham Chelsea Nov 2007

Mac recently exhibited at Art Gotham in Chelsea at the Square Foot Exhibition 2007. This is an exhibition where the artists must create artworks on canvas’s exactly 12″x12″ square. The exhibition is a great place to view and purchase emerging and mid-career artists using a variety of media. Look out for the show this year at Art Gotham’s new location in Soho. www.artgotham.com

Mac’s image titled “What Happens Next?” created lively debate in the gallery audience.

Macs studio Manager Julie Wood also exhibited a group of paintings based on a Maori love song from New Zealand.
